Visitors to the Atomic Bomb Casualty Commission

Many national and local government officials, scientists, physicans and others have visited the ABCC facilities. Among the dignitaries were members of the Japanese Royal Family, ambassadors from virtually every nation, representatives from several scientific associations and international organizations.

There were some unusual visitors. Japanese actress Yoshiko Yamaguchi visited on April 7th, 1952. She eventually became a member of the Diet.

On February 12th, 1954 Joe DiMaggio and Marilyn Monroe visited the ABCC while on their honeymoon. Their host was Bobby Brown, former third baseman for the New York Yankees. He eventually became president of the American League.

They visited the ABCC because Dr. Brown and Dr. Jack Lewis, an internist at ABCC, were classmates at Stanford University Medical School. (Worthy of note - in the diary of Dr. William C. Moloney is a photograph of their visit to teh ABCC. Dr. Moloney's diary is part of the Library's ABCC Collection.)

Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt visited the ABCC on June 9th, 1953. These photgraphs are from the collection of Dr. H. Grant Taylor. There are six photographs in this set. Shown here are two scenes from her visit.

Mrs. Roosevelt is shown intently listening to Dr. Taylor, ABCC Director. In the background are several members of the ABCC.

Mrs. Roosevelt is shown preparing to depart. She is shaking hands with Dr. Hiroshi Maki, Associate Director of the ABCC and Director of the JNIH Hiroshima Branch Laboratory. Standing next to Dr. Maki is Dr. Taylor.
