Menninger Collection

In June, 2003, the Houston Academy of Medicine-Texas Medical Center Library became the owner of the Menninger Foundation’s Library of Psychiatry and Psychoanalysis. This fine gift included their clinical library of books and journals, the historical and rare book collections, and complete runs of the Menninger publications.

There are over 3,000 rare books in psychiatry and psychoanalysis. This is a wide-ranging collection with titles pertaining to psychology, psychiatry, and psychoanalysis in both adults and children. The publications by and commentaries about Sigmund Freud are so extensive that the Menninger Library staff devised an expanded classification scheme to shelve these titles. There are also a number of titles devoted to community mental health, nursing, and work in prisons.

The rare book collection includes a large number of early journals on psychoanalysis, hundreds of German psychiatric texts, and annual reports from American asylums. In addition to psychiatric materials, there are many fine texts related to the broader field of medicine. One of these volumes is a 1783 German edition of Andreas Vesalius’s anatomy with reproductions of the illustrations from the original Vesalius.

The bound volumes of Menninger Clinic publications begin in 1919. In addition, there are boxes of papers from Menninger employees, the publication TPR, Menninger Perspectives, The Menninger Quarterly, and the Bulletin of the Menninger Clinic. All these document the programs, staff, and research interests of the Menninger Clinic in Topeka, Kansas. Alumni directories, annual reports, and Directories of Training Programs from the Menninger Foundation are all included in the collection.

The Menninger Foundation Rare Book Collection is maintained at the HAM-TMC Library’s Historical Research Center. Although the collection is not fully catalogued, researchers are welcome to inquire about the availability of historical books, Menninger publications, and papers from former staff at the Topeka clinic.
